I went with my Art class on a
trip to the Emirates Palace on January 10th
2007, to view the work of internationally
acclaimed artist, Khaldoon.
I entered the palace with a feeling of
apprehension, wondering what the hours ahead of
us would bring.
We introduced ourselves and Khaldoon offered to
show us a short clip that he directed of the
work process he goes through as an artist. After
viewing the video, we then went on to look
around the gallery (most of us oohing and aahing
at all the different paintings).
The most successful part of the trip, however,
was when we all went out onto the grounds and
painted together. “Be free, let yourself go”,
encouraged Khaldoon. And as quickly as it began,
the day was over.
With reluctance, we boarded the bus and went
home. Rarely do I find art to be so liberating,
and I thank Khaldoon for his lack of
restriction.
I also thank Miss Mochrie for organising a trip
that I initially thought would be an
interesting, educational opportunity, but which
equally presented itself as an eye-opening,
enlightening and incredibly enjoyable
experience.
