British School
The aim of this experience was to create a new
philosophy to enable the participants freely use
their hands to express their feelings and
emotions. Therefore; the group has welcomed this
new experience, gathering outdoors, in a
fascinating setting, where all the natural
elements are provided.
This setting has resulted in the creation of a
unique and a new language; the language of
color. It is a simple language that delivers
various feelings through the usage of simple and
natural tools without the intrusion of other
elements. The participants used their hands,
expressing their visions and emotions, with an
"All natural concept" besides the colors and the
recycling paper.
The language of color can be easily delivered
and understood to all nations around the world;
no obstacles could hamper its delivery to all
people. This had been proven with the
participation of many artists, who descend from
various origins, and they had been able to
create a sole and creative work.
The result of this work has not become clear
yet; while there is one notion that connects the
colors in addition to their symbols with nature,
and this would lead to an outcome that differs
from any other experience.
workshops with British School Al
Khubairat January 2007
New Year’s Eve, proved to be a
fateful evening when Ruth Mochrie, the Head of
Art at the British School Al Khubairat, visited
Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi.
Instead of going for a coffee, she discovered
the ‘Dialogue with Colour’ exhibition and met
and spoke with Khaldoun, the founder of Al Balqa
Gallery. From their chance meeting, a programme
of workshops quickly emerged and was planned for
the first week back in school.
The project involved the examination students
and their ages ranged from 15 – 18.
Each workshop was different but their
commonality was to encourage the students to
work more freely, acknowledging mistakes were
good and to creatively express their feelings.
The students visited the Al Balqa Gallery
exhibition first and watched videos showing
Khaldoun at work in his studio in Fuhais in
Jordan. They also saw other artists at work in
their studios.
On two of the workshop visits, Sana ………? another
Jordanian artist,, spoke passionately about her
life and her paintings. Khaldoun was also
persuaded to do the same. The students were
allowed access into their ways of working and
what influenced them.
After the students had had time to experience
and discover the work in the exhibition, they
went on to work in various locations around the
hotel, to produce paintings and installations.
Initially the students felt unsure and tentative
what to do, but they quickly entered into the
spirit of the workshop and freed themselves up
to produce exciting pieces of work.
It was a really inspiring and fun experience for
us and we are now looking forward to developing
the work into a variety of different mediums.
We have been invited by Khaldoun to visit his
heritage village and cultural centre in Fuhais
in the near future.
We look forward to continued future developments
with Khaldoun Daoud and Rowaq Al Balqa
Foundation for Arts.
